Some homeowners have reported that, shortly after the exterior wall of their homes was finished with stone-imitation paint and passed inspection, the coating began to blister and peel off after a period of time, severely compromising the aesthetic appearance of the house. What causes this phenomenon?

As the saying goes, even the finest surface requires a solid base; poor application of the putty layer can compromise both the quality of subsequent work and the final coating finish.
There are three main reasons for coating blistering and peeling:
1. Insufficient curing of the putty strength, or the use of low-quality primer putty;
2. Inadequate or missed application of the primer, resulting in insufficient adhesion between the finish coat and the putty layer;
3. Water infiltration causes the putty to chalk.
Precautions:
1. It is essential to allow sufficient curing time for the putty. After the putty has cured for 24 hours, water-cure it for 2–3 days to prevent powdering caused by inadequate curing and to accelerate the neutralization of alkalinity. In addition, only qualified putty products should be used.
2. Prior to the application of the finish coat, a sealing primer must be fully brushed or sprayed on, ensuring even coverage.
3. Avoid construction in low-temperature conditions; the construction environment must be above 5°C.
Improper application of exterior wall coatings can, at best, detract from the building’s aesthetic appeal and, at worst, significantly shorten the service life of the exterior walls. Therefore, it is recommended to select high-quality products and employ professional installation techniques when applying exterior coatings, in order to achieve superior stone-effect finishes.
